Another top decision was made musically, bringing in the assistance of Aiden ‘Skitz Beatz’ Hogart (I bought his compilation mixtape ‘In The Zone’ back in 2006, which isn’t really important apart from pointing out, it’s still on my iPod, automatically placing it in the classics category) as the music producer/composer/curator of the show. I’ll only semi-extend my praise to the show for now, I should return by the finale to round up on how it all panned out, see if it developed the edge necessary to make it memorable. As of now, it’s not half as bad as expected and in this particular field, that’s pretty damn good.
I caught up Skitz Beats and we talked Grime Music. Elijah says: Skitz, what have you been working on lately, seems like you have been quiet for a while?
S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: Well when it ain't been tied down by my college work I been in the studio putting together my next production CD. Putting in work on the Brazen and Tempa T projects as well. Elijah says: Why do you think producers haven't taken the same path as you, and done a full album like In The Zone? S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: I couldnt tell you, maybe they dont have the same drive and ambition as me. In The Zone was the first part in a carefully planned and structured process. Elijah says: Do you care to elaborate on that, what is the next step?
S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: Well, I feel as a producer I am partly responsible for pushing the sound out to the masses, lets face it, not everyone is as open minded to mc's as you and I are. S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: The correct beats matched with the right artists can do nothing but good for the scene.
I believe a producers job is more than just composing the beat. Elijah says: Talking of the producers matched with the right artists, and we are at the tail end of 07, what have been your favourite songs from this year? S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: In the corner from the Skepta LP was a very well thought out and constructed track. But Sirens and Something About Your Smile are also favourites. Elijah says: What did you think of the albums from the 'Top 4' Dizzee, Wiley, Kano & Lethal B?
S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: I believe Dizzee has done what few thought he could do by creating a solid 3rd album with successful singles. Kano fell short in my opinion delivering an album that had no innovative production or ideas from my once favourite MC.
S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: Wiley and Lethal had fairly subdue campaigns without a strong lead single for either. Perhaps 'No Qualms or Bow E3' would have been more suitable options. Elijah says: Who is your personal top 5? S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: Davinche, Rapid, Lewi White, Wiley, Skepta Elijah says: Do you know why there are rarely any Co-productions in grime, compared to the dubstep scene? S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: I can only put it down to egos, I'm quite open to collaborate with good producers, perhaps the next CD will address that. Elijah says: Who do you think is going to be big in 08, obvious names spring to mind, but are there any that you know have the ability to come through?
S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: Well i believe with the correct grooming Griminal stands a chance of being something slightly special, I believe he possesses a good character and with good tracks and production he could shine a light. Elijah says: Do you think it has been a good year for grime? What do you think grime can take from this year? S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: Grime and 'urban' music has had its up and downs to be fair this year but it shows that well promoted and campaigned Cd's can sell as in the Kano and Dizzee cases. Elijah says: Do you describe your music as grime? S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: Id say some of my songs are very grimey but there are other times when I will create hybrids of other genres and mash them all in.
I believe boundaries are for the lazy. Elijah says: Are you going to get involved in any other scenes i.e bassline or dubstep? Skitz Vs Benga or T2 Vs Skitz, is that possible? S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: Yea that's more than possible, I have alot of respect for talented producers so if its going to be good music, genre goes out of the window. Sticking within constraints produces forced music.
Elijah says: Any final thoughts Skitz to share with the world? S.K.I.T.Z Beatz says: Look out for the next CD, its not gonna be hard to miss. Massive PR campaign hitting your screens, radio and Streets Check out Skitz Beatz on www.skitzbeatz.co.uk and watch out for his new album in 2008. Pretty silly putting this first, he might say im begging. But I agree with most things he said about, so I will treat you to a pint one day for that mate.
(No Momo) - These guys keep it grimey, but don't post often enough. They have an online magazine coming soon that I may be part of.
